How to Determine Which Ringtone Format Works With Your Phone

Cell phone manufacturers have developped several ringtones formats and some phones, such as Nokia's or Motorola's, can have one of 4 different ringtones systems. Which one applies to your phone? Find out:

Here's How:

  1. First, if you are not sure wether or not your phone accepts new ringtones (not just presets), check out the ringtones compatibility list. Otherwise, proceed to step #2.
  2. There are 3 ways to add ringtones: 1- Typing notes directly on the phone using the "Melody Composer"; 2- Sending it to your phone via airwaves and 3- Transfering it from your computer to the phone using a cable or infrared connection.
  3. First, check for a Melody Composer. Browse your owner's manual for keywords such as "Ringtone Composer", "My Melodies", "Melody Composer" or other similar expressions. Don't find it? Try next step...
  4. Maybe it can receive ringtones wirelessly. Look back to the advertising your saw when you bought the phone. Does it refer to "Downloadable Ringtones"?
  5. If none of the above applies, you may have a phone that lets you transfer ringtones from your computer to the phone. It's the case of some Kyocera, Nokia and Sanyo phones, for instance.
  6. One example is Nokia phones built around 2002 and 2003 for North-America. Some of them are compatible with the Nokia PC suite, a handy software that lets you transfer ringtones yourself.
  7. Now that you have a better idea of which format applies to your phone, go back to the ringtone you were trying to get or browse our free ringtones.
  8. Once you select a ringtone on this site, you will have a choice of various ringtones formats and specific instructions will be provided later. Good luck!
